This song was actually written a few years ago, I think 2014. It was one of those songs that just kind of appeared fully formed, so I thought it fit onto this record. In any case, it fits here better than on the other record that I recorded it for (that record is so far unreleased, but hopefully it will come out soonish).
It's about a dream I had where everyone was replaced every night by a replica person who had all of the same memories as you do. Everyone is only alive for that one day between waking in the morning and going to sleep at night, and noone realises that this day is the only day they're going to have alive on earth. From there I thought of what would someone do who somehow found out about this fact.. You could do whatever you wanted, because all of those things that you think make you the person you are, and the responsibilities that go with that, none of that is really yours. The song ends with a couple trying to keep each other awake to keep their one day going as long as possible. For some reason I find that image really touching.
lyrics
Every night as we dream, we all reach the end of things
When we wake we will be somebody new.
And that man will think he's me, he'll be filled with memories
That aren't his, they belong to all of my others.
Run away from who you are, this could be your final start.
One last chance to have things over again.
You don't know, nor do I.
It's just one day in a life when in fact it's a lifetime in a day.
We are all brand new, and there's nothing we could do
That has been done.
Impossible mundanities.
Run away from who you are, this could be your final start.
One last chance to have things over again.
If you knew, would you cheat?
Would you try to fight off sleep?
Would you make me keep watch for any changes?
Looking out for a trace in the lines of your tired face
For a moment of a lack of recognition.
Run away from who you are, this could be your final start.
One last chance to have things over again.
St Augustus is the solo venture of one Cameron Smith. Follows on from the band Mt Augustus. Slowcore folk pop with occasional forays into volume and noise.
My favourite track on this compilation is actually Hot Magnets' remix of 'Wolves Bite and Disappear'. If you're reading this and you haven't heard it, you need to rethink your choices in life. James
An EP of mostly pacy, fuzzy alt-pop/rock. The distorted noise is ably supported by dreamy vocal harmonies, which perfectly fit the mood and tempo. Short and sweet – I'm super impressed! Michael Reilly
