about

I came up with the chord changes earlier in 2015 while visiting my family in Perth, although they weren't very structured at that point. The chords gave me a real Jason Molina vibe, which I tried to go with. The song didn't get a lot more structured than its initial version, although there's a cool little bit in the verses where I cut the last chord of the progression and go straight to the vocal line for the next round. It gives a nice momentum to the verses.

I like the sparseness of the recording. You can hear the guitar rubbing and creaking against my clothes, I played the part so quietly which means you can hear every other noise in the room. The lead guitar is my attempt at a slide guitar part. Thank god for reverb.

Thematically, it's about a bunch things: the folly of trying to plan out your life to the nth degree, everyone looking for companionship and yet ultimately being alone, and living a life of privilege and trying to be aware of that fact. It's one of those songs that kind of jumps from thought to thought every couple of lines, but there's a weird logic that binds them all together. There are a few songs like this on the record (Latest Disaster being another good example), which might be a result of the short turnaround between composition and completion.

lyrics

Trouble will find you, trouble will win.
Trouble will bend you, outlast you in the end.
Devil on your shoulder, devil in your chest.
Devil in your inner ear, burrow in your head.

You say that you'll give me everything I need.
What I need is for you to say you'll give me what I need.
And if they think you've got it they're gonna get it out of you.
So honey, I hope you've got something worthwhile to give.

Limitless wants, limited spots.

We're not asking you to put yourself on that cross.
Only to acknowledge your win is another's loss.
