Hey, it's late. You're looking pleased with yourself. Yeah, it's written all over your face. Too late to try and hide it with a scowl, Or bury it in double meaning. But wait, you say your mind is clouded in doubt And you are buried knee-deep in clay. Okay, I won't keep tying you down Or bury you in double meanings. Am I your latest disaster? Just a convenient ruse? Devoid of any other meaning Or any context that I can use. I hear the echo of your laughter And the sight of your old tattoo Devoid of any other meaning Or any context that can ring true You're the disaster, what's left to prove? You're the disaster, what's the next move? You're the disaster, what's left to prove? You're the disaster, no room to move.

Always Ends 02:30
It don't matter what you want, you know the plan. This whole chapter plays out in the palm of your hand And it always ends the same. It always ends the same, It always ends the way as specified by your name. Always, always. Do we really have to video everything you say? It don't matter what you say, you've made your mind. You thought it all out as you came up from behind. And it always ends the same, it always ends the same. It's always justified by the signing of your name. Always, always. Do we really have to justify everything we say?

Trouble will find you, trouble will win. Trouble will bend you, outlast you in the end. Devil on your shoulder, devil in your chest. Devil in your inner ear, burrow in your head. You say that you'll give me everything I need. What I need is for you to say you'll give me what I need. And if they think you've got it they're gonna get it out of you. So honey, I hope you've got something worthwhile to give. Limitless wants, limited spots. We're not asking you to put yourself on that cross. Only to acknowledge your win is another's loss.

Candy 04:02
Half remaining drink on the counter top. Weighing up the options: continue or to stop. Pushing down the awkwardness with another glass, Or get behind the wheel, put these people in the past. Candy, drawing in and standing Over in the corner, grabbing at her shoulder. Listening to the banter, the silence that surrounds her, The bright downlights that haunt her, highlighting her frame. Enveloped in the sound bouncing off the walls. Hidden in the volume seeping to the core. Candy, drawing in and standing Over in the corner, grabbing at her shoulder. Listening to the banter, the silence that surrounds her, The bright downlights that haunt her, highlighting her frame. The empty conversation, the bodies' condensation Collecting on the ceiling, the useless air-conditioning. The sense of youth near gone, of duty lingering on. Now they're playing the final song, we're dispersing through the door.

Run Away 03:29
Every night as we dream, we all reach the end of things When we wake we will be somebody new. And that man will think he's me, he'll be filled with memories That aren't his, they belong to all of my others. Run away from who you are, this could be your final start. One last chance to have things over again. You don't know, nor do I. It's just one day in a life when in fact it's a lifetime in a day. We are all brand new, and there's nothing we could do That has been done. Impossible mundanities. Run away from who you are, this could be your final start. One last chance to have things over again. If you knew, would you cheat? Would you try to fight off sleep? Would you make me keep watch for any changes? Looking out for a trace in the lines of your tired face For a moment of a lack of recognition. Run away from who you are, this could be your final start. One last chance to have things over again.

Hollow days and routine ways. We'll walk right through the embers. Walk right through the embers. New model cars under same old stars. We'll walk right through embers From now until December. And we're pulled down by the waves That we discovered today. And the waves have always been Even though we've never seen them. Reach for stars and preserved hearts. We'll walk right through the embers, Walk right through the embers. Writing songs to right our wrongs. We'll walk right through embers And hope we'll be remembered. If you could live a million years And still keep your memory clear You'd still end in the same place, As if you'd died on your first day. How could we conceive this view? We'll walk right through the embers, Walk right through the embers. Look to me and I'll see you. We'll walk right through embers, And lie in them forever

Millions now alive will never die. (That's wishful thinking) Maybe our sons and daughters will never hurt. (That's wishful thinking) Things will get better even if we don't. (That's wishful thinking) Someone else will fix this mess It so easily could have been over now We can measure up to our parents on their best day. (That's what we owe them) We can lie through our teeth to fearful dying eyes. (That's what we owe them) We'll try to provide comfort where none should exist. (That's what we owe them) We'll hide our teary eyes. It so easily could have been over now

His very first summer job As a trolley boy down at the town centre. Two hooks and some elastic rope Holding them together out in the carpark. The tension was too much, The metal straightened up. Whipping back with cracking speed, It hit him in the neck. The doctor who was passing by Used a pen to try to get him air. You saw it on TV in a motel with your family. This kid you knew from school on the news, You were both 14 years old. Your body shook with laughter, You fought a burning smile as the horror took its hold. You couldn't comprehend, reality rejected, It must be some bad joke. He was just some weird kid Who used to say stupid shit.

All this time, it feels like a spinning wheel, Like a mountain obscured at the top. And it is never gonna stop, no it is never gonna stop. When it blows through your home and seeps through your bones Like the deepest chill that you've felt, But you can never ever tell, no you can never ever tell. In a short pop song, half profound, half wrong, With an obsession with another one, With a bubbling doubt that weighs a ton. These are just afterthoughts that rhyme, And sometimes they miss their mark. When you're trapped in deep, in a deep deep sleep, Trying to scrub the sand from your eyes, And you are never getting wise, no you are never getting wise. 'Til your very last days with your blurred out gaze And that creeping feeling you've felt That you can never ever tell, no you can never ever tell. Feels like falling. This winter's store, It's a gaping maw That devours all that we have found. It feels too soon For a blue sky view, For a bright full moon That illuminates the deepest chasm. All this time, it feels like a spinning wheel, Like a mountain obscured at the top, And it is never gonna stop, no it is never gonna stop.

Descending 01:43
Forced from the water, Forced from the warmth. Fall out of favour And into the storm All that became you And all that you see, Stuck in an instant Before eternity.

I hope the end comes to me at night, I hope it comes without warning. I hope they find me lying in the morning light When I didn't come calling. I hope I don't spend too long on my own If you move on before me. Don't want to find you lying in the morning light When you didn't come calling. I want to see the lines on your face As a result of those years. I want to see you go grey and face the dawning day With the very same fears. I want to feel that knot in my chest When you're driving in the rain. I want to feel that hurt and make the whole world hurt When I go and cause you pain. I'll see you on the other side of the night.

about

Seven Days was written and recorded quickly in late 2015 and early 2016. The idea was to write and record each song in a single day - the first seven songs were written in a seven day stretch during December, with the encouragement of a bunch of likeminded artists lead by Mr Harley Young, with three more written at the start of February. One last song was cherry picked from another set of previously recorded tracks that it didn't fit alongside.

The challenge meant working quickly and not second guessing things. Performances and recorded sounds are sometimes flawed, lyrics are at times undercooked, the skeletons of the songs are generally pretty basic. Often songs were recorded late at night after work, desperately trying to finish before that midnight deadline. Despite all of that, after that initial burst of writing in December I decided that I really liked the results of this method, and that I should continue on and complete a full album.

See the individual tracks on the Bandcamp page for a bit of info on each of them.
